Author: Cole Bennett

Cole Bennett will tell you flat out: he's never chopped his own firewood out of necessity, never hauled water from a well, and most nights he's coming home to a neighborhood a lot more paved than off-grid. He's not out here pretending otherwise. What Cole's got instead is a real soft spot for the idea of it, and the kind of work ethic that makes people around him take notice. Something about a person building their own water system, growing their own food, and not owing the power company a dime every month just gets him. He grew up around folks who could fix anything with what was in the truck bed, and that stuck with him even after life took him somewhere a good bit more citified. Neighbors who've watched him chase this thing describe the same thing every time: the man does not do anything halfway. So Cole reads. A lot. Building codes, old forum threads, university extension guides, the fine print on water filtration ratings, whatever it takes to actually understand a topic instead of just repeating what sounds right. He'd rather spend three hours confirming a number than publish a guess, and he holds himself to that standard on every single guide, every time, no exceptions. That kind of quiet discipline is rarer than it should be, and it's the whole reason this site exists: Cole wanted the resource he never found when he first got curious about all this — something written by someone who cares enough to get the details right, even if that someone is watching from the suburbs instead of the tree line. He figures there's a lot of people out there just like him: dreaming about the land, the garden, the quiet, maybe never quite getting there, but wanting real answers instead of Instagram-fantasy nonsense in the meantime. This site's for them too — built the same way Cole builds everything, with more care than it strictly needed.

How to Winterize Your Lumber Mill

A portable sawmill left unprepared for cold weather is prone to hydraulic and engine problems, blade brittleness, and accelerated wear — winterizing before the first hard freeze prevents most of these rather than dealing with them as breakdowns mid-winter. Fuel and engine prep before the first …

Portable Winches for Off-Grid Log Moving

A portable winch (a self-contained pulling unit, gas or electric powered, distinct from a stationary vehicle-mounted winch) provides active pulling force for moving felled logs across an off-grid property without requiring a tractor or ATV to physically drag the load — useful both for getting a …
